Odaiba, I’ve been here once before on one of those whistle stop coach tours. Jump off the coach and you have 15 mins to go have a look at the Statue of Liberty! That was it for my experience of this very popular entertainment area of Tokyo. So I decided to go find out why Odaiba is such a draw for the young Tokyoites?
The most interesting way to get to Odaiba is to take the Yurikamome monorail from Shinbashi station. It may be a little more expensive than other routes but you get a great view as you travel through the new, modern area of Shiodome and then over the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Bay, well worth the cost. I actually arrived today by the Rinkaisen, subway from Oimachi..very boring but it’s much easier from my house.
We first decide to head for the Decks shopping centre..mostly because it was coming up to lunch time and I heard there were severel options in the centre where you can eat and enjoy the view out over the Rainbow Bridge. So we found the 5th floor offered most chioce and opted for a ‘help yourself’ Indian curry buffet. Big mistake! The curry was ok, but the ‘help yourself’ part meant that for the rest of the afternoon I was going to be a few kilos heavier, and we had planned on doing a lot of walking…but the view from the restaurant was worth it.
After lunch we walked over to Pallete Town and the VenusFort Shopping centre. This place had all the designer outlets you could want, my personal favourite, Billabong, had a sale on so got some really cool board shorts! What make this shopping centre a little different is its ceiling. It’s painted with a very realistic sky which changes with the time of day. Yes, it can do sunrise and sunsets! This sort of thing can look a bit tacky…but they have done it well here.
I enjoyed the day out in Odaiba..certainly got a better impression of the place than the coach tour gave me. But I would recommend you come here on a weekend when there are more people. This is a place that really benefits from being busy. I will definately try to come back at night time, I think this is when Odaiba will really come alive. I’ll let you know what it was like!
